Six Weeks From Election Day, Mucarsel-Powell Controls the Momentum

MIAMI – As Election Day nears in Florida’s 26th Congressional District, Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has surged in recent polls and holds all the momentum heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

In a survey published on Friday by the organization Protect Our Care, Mucarsel-Powell topped Curbelo by one point, 45-44. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP) between Sep. 17 and Sept. 19, surveyed 511 voters in the district who answered automated calls. The margin of error was ±4.3.

Similarly, a recent survey commissioned by the New York Times showed both candidates in a virtual tie, with Curbelo holding a slim 3-point lead over Mucarsel-Powell. The poll, conducted by Siena College and published last week, also showed a majority of voters would prefer Democrats to take control of the U.S. House after November. It was conducted between Sept. 13 and Sept. 17 and included 509 completed calls, with a margin of error of ±5.

Most experts have pointed to Rep. Curbelo as one of the most endangered Republican incumbents in the country. As Debbie controls more and more of the momentum, evidence on the ground suggests they’re correct.

“Congressman Curbelo has put his party’s politics above the interests of our community, and voters are tired of it,” said Melvin Félix, spokesperson for the Mucarsel-Powell campaign. “Our campaign’s momentum continues to grow as more people learn about Debbie’s vision and about Curbelo’s terrible voting record in Washington. 

“Curbelo has been on the wrong side of every issue that matters most to our families, whether it’s on healthcare, tax reform, or gun safety. South Floridians are ready for a real champion like Debbie who will actually represent the values of this community in Congress.”
