Miami, FL – The Florida chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the nation’s largest public services employees union with more than 1.6 million members, has endorsed Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for the 2018 election.
“We support Debbie’s commitment to secure pensions, improve our healthcare system and protect Medicare and Social Security,” said Jacqui Carmona, Political Director of AFSCME Florida. “South Florida needs a representative who cares about workers and the middle class, and we can trust Debbie to always put hardworking people first.”
Unions, workers and allies in Florida have rallied around Mucarsel-Powell in the fight to unseat Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo. In the past months, Debbie has been endorsed by Florida AFL-CIO, SEIU Florida, United Faculty of Miami-Dade College, United Teachers of Dade, and Teamsters Local Union 769.
In addition to Mucarsel-Powell’s strong support among community groups, her support among voters is also surging. According to recent surveys, Debbie has all the momentum heading into the final weeks of the campaign. One poll showed Mucarsel-Powell leading Curbelo, a two-term congressman, by one point (45-44).
